Nutsedge

During the warm summer months, many people battle against aggressive weeds ruining the look and feel of their yards. One of the most annoying summer grassy weeds on the East Coast is nutsedge, also known as nutgrass.

This aggressive weed is not only unsightly, but it can also outcompete native grasses and planned gardens. It is notoriously difficult to eliminate, due to its intensive root system and resilient biology.

However, eradication is not impossible. Armed with information and preventive lawn care, you can rid your yard of nutsedge once and for all.

How to Identify Nutsedge

Nutsedge is similar to grass, but its appearance is distinct. It tends to grow taller and faster than grass, and has three leaves and flowers at the tips of the stems. Flowers are typically yellow, light green, or deep red.

It can also be identified by its tough, triangular-shaped stem.

Nutsedge are perennials, which means they come back year after year. After mowing them down, they grow back extremely fast. Even after ripping them out by the roots, the plant will likely be able to recover by next summer.

How to Prevent Nutsedge

The seeds thrive in wet soil conditions. Overwatering, poor irrigation, and excessive storms can cause them to take over your yard. And once they do, they can survive even in drought-like conditions.

Thin areas, such as the edges of walkways, are also common places for nutsedge to appear. Cutting your lawn too short can also create ideal conditions for summer weeds.

Because nutsedge is not a grass, most herbicides for grassy weeds will not help the problem. Instead, the best way to beat nutsedge is preventative weed control and holistic lawn health.
